Alcatraz Island - General Park Information

Alcatraz Island offers a close-up look at the site of the first lighthouse and US fort on the West Coast, an infamous federal penitentiary long off-limits to the public (and despised by inmates), and the historic 18 month occupation by Indians of All Tribes. Rich in cultural history, there is also a natural side to the Rock - gardens, tide pools, bird colonies, and bay views beyond compare.

The hours of operation vary with the season - departures are available about every half hour throughout the day beginning at 9:30am. Evening tours and combined Angel Island -Alcatraz Island tours are also available depending on the season. Alcatraz is open every day except Christmas and New Year day. Alcatraz frequently sells out in advance, as much as a week in advance in summer and near holidays. For schedules, prices, and to purchase tickets in advance up to and including September 24, 2006 please visit the Blue & Gold Fleet web site. For schedules, prices, and to purchase tickets in advance for after September 24, 2006 please visit the Alcatraz Cruises web site.

There is no entrance fee to visit Alcatraz Island. However there is a charge for the ferry service to and from the island which is supplied by a private company under contract with the National Park Service. For additional information on schedules, prices, and to purchase tickets in advance (tickets are made available about 30 days in advance) please visit the Blue and Gold Fleet web site. This is for visits prior to September 25 2006.
